3 Benefits That Come From Learning Conversational Spanish – Learning Spanish Will Make You Better

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

The choice to learn any language is indeed a big one to make, and the process is often scary, and can be long, if learning is not approached correctly. However, in the end, the choice to gain new language skills is always worth it. More and more, in the United States, Spanish is becoming increasingly prevalent, and because of this, it’s also becoming more, necessary to have some degree of Spanish fluency.

Below are 3 points to illustrate how life would change if people learned conversational Spanish, and why we need to gain these skills regardless.

1. Being bilingual has been proven to expand horizons, increase IQ and cause biologically beneficial restructuring in the brain. More than that, a knowledge of Spanish will enable you to experience the world, its people, its beauty, and it’s cultural offerings, in an entirely different way.

2. Expanding on this cultural openness gained by being bilingual, and in particular being able to speak Spanish, it should be noted that travel, whether domestically or abroad will be made easier. There is a whole world out there to explore, and because you have knowledge of Spanish you will also be able to pick up the basics of other romance languages quite easily.

3. As the population of Spanish speakers grows, and ages, many of these people will prefer their native language, and thus will need someone to help them communicate their needs. This pervasiveness is apparent, as everything from packaging and instruction books, to classrooms and national anthems is being made bilingual. It’s not going to change, and honestly, it’s a fun challenge. Conversational Spanish is incredibly easy to learn, and so worth it in the end.

With all the reasons to learn Spanish out there, it’s no surprise that it is becoming such a popular second or third language.  In order to make the most of your time learning this beautiful language, you need to find the right short cuts.  So what is the easiest way to learn Spanish?  Clearly the easiest way to learn any language is through immersion.  Children are like sponges when it comes to language learning and that is because they listen and practice.  No book or course can give you the same communication skills.  Here are some ways you can immerse yourself in Spanish.

Live in a Spanish-Speaking Country

Living in a Spanish-speaking country is one of the easiest ways to learn Spanish.  When you go to the grocery store, eat at a restaurant, watch the news, or read the newspaper, everything will be in Spanish.  For students, this could mean a semester or year studying abroad.  For others, this could mean a year working in a Spanish-speaking country.  This option is an expensive one however and it is simply not a viable one for many people.

Use an Interactive Computer Program

Why bury your nose into countless books when you could watch and listen to an interactive computer program?  Computer programs for language immersion have become very popular in the last few years and some people think it is the easiest way to learn Spanish.  They are a good choice for people who are gearing up for a business trip in a Spanish-speaking country because you can cover a lot of ground in a short time.  They can get pricy, especially if you plan on buying programs for different levels.

Live as if You Were in a Spanish-Speaking Country

If an extended trip or working vacation in a Spanish-speaking country is simply not within your means, mimic a stay abroad without leaving home turf.  Watch movies and listen to the radio in Spanish.  Make friends with Spanish-speakers in your local community.  Organize a language exchange with a Spanish-speaker and more than anything, practice.  You might feel embarrassed struggling to communicate initially but this is the easiest and fastest way to learn Spanish.  You can’t complete one thousand grammar book exercises and expect to be able to communicate.  Communication only comes with practice and the only way to do it is by surrounding yourself with Spanish on a daily basis.

So there you have it.  The easiest way to learn Spanish for one person may not work for another.  The key is to find the right fit that is within your budget and most of all, to put all of your effort into it.  With passion and dedication, you will be well on your way to learning Spanish the easy way!
